Founded in 1927 by amateur golf enthusiast Samuel Ryder, an Englishman who took up the sport on a doctor`s advice after his 50th birthday, the Ryder Cup evolved from an informal match between American and English golfers into an official tournament. Ryder`s generous gift of a solid gold cup, and his efforts to institutionalize the match, turned the Ryder into one of the most thrilling events in the golf calendar. This documentary traces the history of the event, which remains one of the last sporting competitions based on prestige instead of prize money. With a catalogue of the moments which made the tournament so memorable throughout the years, the archived photographs and documents span the entirety of its existence, all the way up to the 2004 match. Interviews with luminaries such as Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods, and others, inject the tale with personal recollections and experiences, and the early years, dominated by American players such as Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, and Jack Niclaus, are detailed. The excitement of the 1985 and 2002 Belfry wins is also rerecounted, making this an unforgettable entry in the history of a remarkable event.
